Helga Kristmundsdóttir (b. 1953 in Iceland):
Helga Kristmundsdóttir graduated from the Reykjavik Academy of Fine Arts in ceramics (1976) and weaving (1986). And she graduated as a painter from the Aarhus Academy of Fine Arts in 1995. Today, Helga works mainly with oil painting, drawing, watercolor and graphics and she says about her art:
"The Icelandic nature has always fascinated me; It is magnificent, strong, and full of mystery and imagination. My painting technique is almost abstract. I don't paint specific places but try to explore the forces of nature. I try to capture and reproduce the atmosphere I experience in nature. In this way, I have the freedom to play with the elements of nature, and create my own world, my own nature, that no one else has seen or experienced."
Erik Meistrup has written "The Pictures of the Prehistoric Landscape" and here he mentions, among other things:
"One senses in the world of paintings, Aesir and Giants and the heroes of the Sag age have just retired to their pantheon or farms that are beyond the reach of humans or other powers, leaving their battle and playground to nature itself. A nature that itself again and again makes the world a battleground for its immense inner and outer forces, which constantly shape and reshape the country. But also, a nature that has its moments of monumental beauty and tranquility before the violent forces of nature unfold again.
Helga thus seems to work with a number of inner emotional images, through which all her impressions and experiences undergo a transformation and are infused with grandeur, drama and wildness, but also a peculiarly rustic vulnerability. Helga's paintings are thereby transformed into a kind of cultural and mental history of an eternal Iceland that represents something untamable and proud, but also something desolate and vulnerable."
Helga has exhibited and is represented in many countries – including the Nordic countries, Germany, Belgium, England and Austria. Helga is a member of:
